The Astrology of Rest
A theory: you rest best when your Mercury discharges tension and your Venus opens to what feels good.
When looking for ideas regarding rest and nourishment, many astrological pieces I’ve come across default to one’s Moon placement. This makes symbolic sense. The Moon governs cycles, needs, and instinct (in astrology, not Human Design). Yet when it comes to how we rest rather than why we need it, I’ve felt led to look at other planetary placements.
Rest for the physical body is neurological, cognitive, and sensory. It is shaped by how stimulation is processed and how pleasure is metabolized. For this, Mercury and Venus may offer better clues.
Mercury describes the wiring of the nervous system: how information moves, how attention toggles, how meaning is sorted, and how tension accumulates through thought. Venus describes the somatic permission to receive: pleasure, rhythm, beauty, and relational pacing. Together, they can outline an architecture of rest that is unique to you.
Below are simple experiments to try based on your unique astrological placements. As always, allow your Inner Authority to guide you. Some things may work, and some may not. The goal is to gain awareness of what your individual body and brain respond to best.

Mercury + Rest ⦙ Nervous System Framework
Neurological framing in this section draws from Stephen Porges’ Polyvagal Theory, particularly the distinction between sympathetic discharge and parasympathetic access. Within this framework, one's Mercury placement shows how stimulation is metabolized and, therefore, how it must be discharged in order for rest to occur.
⧘ FIRE MERCURIES (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius)
Fire Mercuries accumulate tension through speed, initiative, and intensity of focus. Relaxation comes once the nervous system has been allowed to run its course. Rest is often achieved through COMPLETION OF IMPULSE.
DISCHARGE EXPERIMENTS: Rapid alternating eye movements while standing (like upright EMDR) to release excess sympathetic charge. Try a video guide like this one, or do it on your own. The 7-Min Bilateral Stimulation practice can also help achieve that “completion of impulse” feeling. Short Kundalini kriyas emphasizing spinal flexion. Voice-based venting: speak, yell, or scream freely into a pillow, in the car, or wherever you can be private. No need to judge yourself; you’re just releasing built-up energy.
⧘ EARTH MERCURIES (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn)
Earth Mercuries accumulate tension through precision, responsibility, mulling things over and over, and continuous micro-adjustment. Rest occurs when the body is no longer being used as a tool. Being versus doing. Rest requires downshifting FROM UTILITY INTO SENSATION.
DISCHARGE EXPERIMENTS: Lay on the ground and do some Feldenkrais-style micro-movements; here’s a 1-minute example for lower back. Find an essential oil you respond deeply to. I find cedar, balsam, or pine to be especially grounding. Use an acupressure mat, a trigger-point massage tool, or a small ball to release tension in the feet, back, or shoulders. Incorporate sound therapy like brown noise, 528 Hz, or other healing frequencies. Even a simple Self Hug/Self Containment exercise can be enough to recalibrate.
⧘ AIR MERCURIES (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius)
Air Mercuries accumulate tension through tracking social relationships and letting their minds spin through possibilities, patterns, and abstract ideas. Rest requires CONTAINMENT OF ATTENTION.
DISCHARGE EXPERIMENTS: Trataka or Fixed-point gazing while letting peripheral vision soften (let yourself ZONE OUT). EFT tapping. Breath patterns like the Wim Hof Method or Box Breathing. Listening to repetitive sounds like a metronome, ticking clock, or steady fan noise. Reading one paragraph repeatedly instead of moving forward. Proprioception exercises like this one for balancing or this one for coordination. Light stretching while keeping the eyes focused on a single point.
(You can also check out the Head Center cove for more experiments)
⧘ WATER MERCURIES (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces)
Water Mercuries accumulate tension by getting lost in emotion or letting feelings build up internally. They also need to release a lot of the psychic garbage they can absorb from their environment. Rest requires DRAINGAGE INSTEAD OF SUPPRESSION.
DISCHARGE EXPERIMENTS: Vocal toning or humming near water, or Humming Bee Breath. Long exhale breathing like Alternate Nostril Breathing. Craniosacral still points. Writing feelings or dreams without rereading or interpreting them. Speaking thoughts aloud when alone. Letting tears come without trying to stop them (have a good cry session; tears are cleansing). Warm baths or showers with no music or talking. Gentle rocking or swaying. Hand immersion in warm water. Slow sighing or yawning to encourage release.
MERCURY BY HOUSE ⋙
Houses show where the nervous system stays mentally engaged. Mercury’s house reveals the life area that keeps the mind alert and what helps it finally power down.
1st House: Rest through letting the body lead. Slow walking with no destination, gentle posture shifts, releasing self-monitoring.
2nd House: Rest through physical steadiness. Weight on the body, rhythmic touch, familiar textures that signal safety.
3rd House: Rest through fewer inputs. Turning off devices, limiting conversation, doing simple manual tasks with the hands.
4th House: Rest through familiarity. Repeating the same sounds, scents, or evening routines in a known space.
5th House: Rest through expression without an audience. Doodling, humming, free movement, or play with no goal.
6th House: Rest through releasing self-improvement. Doing tasks imperfectly, skipping optimization, letting “good enough” be enough.
7th House: Rest through quiet togetherness. Sitting or lying near another person without talking or problem-solving.
8th House: Rest through deep slowing/parasympathetic access. Long exhales, relaxing the belly and pelvis, staying with sensations until they soften.
9th House: Rest through mental spaciousness. Reading lightly, listening without needing to remember or learn.
10th House: Rest through not being observed. Being alone, closing the door, dim lighting, reduced sensory exposure.
11th House: Rest through stepping out of group energy. Time alone, turning off social feeds, private rituals.
12th House: Rest through letting the mind drift. Guided imagery, daydreaming, listening to music with eyes closed.

Venus + Rest ⦙ The Restorative Value of Pleasure
Venus governs the capacity to receive. It is how one attains regulation through enjoyment. Venus placements show what conditions allow the body to soften its defenses.
⧘ FIRE VENUSES (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius)
Fire Venuses experience pleasure through vitality and a jovial spirit, not to mention some friendly competition. Here we are looking for pleasure that rises and resolves; even small micro-challenges (like a brisk walk up stairs or playing a quick game) followed by stillness or meditation can feel deeply satisfying.
INVITING PLEASURE: Short bursts of movement that awaken the body: dance to a favorite upbeat song (or tribal drums is really fun), do a few jumping jacks, or punch a pillow rhythmically. Engage your senses with bright colors, warming light, or spices in a meal. Speak or sing aloud, or in the shower, letting your voice express energy in a lighthearted way. Create little “mini-adventures”: try a new coffee shop, take a different route home, or sketch something bold and colorful for five minutes.
⧘ EARTH VENUSES (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn)
Earth Venuses invite pleasure through grounded, repeatable, and tactile experiences. Pleasure is very much based on one's sensory perceptions (experiment: touch, taste, sound, sight, and smell).
INVITING PLEASURE: Cook or eat a meal slowly, paying attention to the texture, temperature, and aroma of ingredients. Enjoy a hot shower or warm foot soak with intention, or roll a tennis ball under your feet while watching a favorite show. Tend your living space: straighten pillows, water a plant, or light a candle. Small acts like these create a sensory “nest.” Carry a small object that feels comforting in your pocket, like a stone or charm, to reconnect to stability anytime. Even a short grounding walk barefoot on grass, or gently stretching in a quiet corner, calls in pleasure.
⧘ AIR VENUSES (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius)
An Air Venus experiences pleasure through lightness, harmony, and ease, opening when interactions and environments feel balanced rather than emotionally demanding. The body softens when there is mental spaciousness, aesthetic order, and connection without pressure or intensity.
INVITING PLEASURE: Curate your environment: open windows for fresh air, adjust lighting, or arrange objects pleasingly on a desk or nightstand. Connect with a friend for lighthearted conversation, text, or shared laughter. Read something beautiful, listen to music with harmony, or explore a short podcast that inspires curiosity. Play with language: write a haiku, doodle letters or words in flowing patterns, or read aloud passages of poetry. Even gentle eye exercises, like looking at symmetrical patterns or cloud shapes, can feel restorative.
⧘ WATER VENUSES (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces)
Water Venuses regulate through emotional permeability and safe surrender. Pleasure must feel enveloping. These people rest when surrender, intimacy, and emotional rapport are present, letting the body relax completely.
INVITING PLEASURE: Water, water, water: warm baths, showers, or even hand immersion in water are soothing. Visit a float tank spa. Sit by a river/lake/the ocean. Have a small water fountain at your desk. Connect deeply with a loved one, pet, or even a comforting object, holding or embracing it gently. Swaddling oneself in blanket is a very simple and calming act to invite pleasure. If you wanna go further with the womb concept, try the Japanese practice Otonamaki. Slow rocking, swaying, or gentle stretches that mimic oceanic rhythms help emotions settle. A rocking chair or hammock may be a worthwhile investment for you.
VENUS BY HOUSE ⋙
Venus’s house shows where the nervous system allows softness. Unlike Mercury, which must discharge stimulation, Venus must be invited:
1st House: Pleasure through softening self-image. Enjoying adornment, gentle movement, or time in front of a mirror without fixing or judging how you look.
2nd House: Pleasure through physical security. Weight on the body, familiar objects, slow eating, and touch that feels steady and reliable.
3rd House: Pleasure through light mental engagement. Reading aloud, easy conversation, writing for enjoyment, or tapping while naming pleasant thoughts.
4th House: Pleasure through emotional safety. Nesting, repeating familiar sounds or scents, rocking, or settling into a space that feels like home.
5th House: Pleasure through playful expression. Creating, moving, or making sound purely for enjoyment, with no audience and no pressure to be good.
6th House: Pleasure through care without fixing. Self-care routines done slowly, without tracking results or trying to improve anything.
7th House: Pleasure through shared presence. Sitting close, eye contact, gentle touch, or breathing together without deciding who leads
8th House: Pleasure through depth and surrender. Practices involving long exhalations, pelvic floor relaxation, or safe consensual power exchange dynamics.
9th House: Pleasure through openness and meaning. Enjoying big views, music or language from other cultures, or experiences that widen perspective.
10th House: Pleasure through sanctioned rest. Being cared for publicly or professionally, spa environments, or permission-based indulgence.
11th House: Pleasure through shared rhythm. Group movement, singing, or being together around a shared feeling without needing intimacy.
12th House: Pleasure through letting go. Drifting, floating, guided imagery, or sound that helps the mind blur and soften.
Piecing It All Together
Again, the purpose of this information isn’t to give the Mind another way to control life and stay caught in the Not-Self. I personally like to use these clues because, when I first began my deconditioning process, I realized I had no idea how to truly rest, let alone give myself permission to experience pleasure. A lot of my Not-Self themes centered on trying to prove myself and denying myself anything good. Having something to work off of and experiment with has been helpful and fun for me.
Another thing I want to point out is if you’re like me and have your Mercury and Venus in the same sign and/or house: how does one discharge that excess energy in Mercury yet invite pleasure through Venus if it’s the same themes? Of course, experiment. For example, I exhaust myself with my Mercury in Taurus in the 11H by ruminating over the collective or where humanity is headed. To discharge, I’ll get off the news and lie on an acupressure mat or something similar. Then, I can invite pleasure through my Venus in Taurus in the 11H by engaging my senses, curating art on Pinterest (social media is an 11H theme), or listening to choir-type music to tap into that collective field in an enjoyable way.
The key is to treat this as a playful, ongoing experiment, noticing how your body and mind respond, and gradually discovering the unique combination of movements, sensations, and experiences that allow your system to truly rest and feel nourished.
