I am terribly suspicious that we are swimming in a sea of abundance and grace. We just don't have all of our tastebuds activated yet. Eating a wild berry, feeling the warmth of the sun on your skin; those are pleasant experiences because the hardware of our bodies facilitates a series of mechanical and chemical reactions for you to experience them as pleasant. Transmitters and receptors. The very act of seeing is limited to the rods and cones in your eyeballs and how they take in light. What I'm saying is that we fixate so much on external stimuli as the source of pleasure and happiness, when in reality the external is only half of the dance. There is the part that must perceive, the part that must take in.

Ra describes Gate 55, in our current stage of evolution, as a place where one is so preoccupied with seeing the cup as either half full or half empty, when its true meaning is simply to marvel that the cup exists at all. Some mornings, you wake and the spirit feels heavy; the day’s activities seem drab, hollow, lacking color. Other mornings, the spirit feels full, and joy flows freely through even the simplest tasks. You perceive the beauty, richness, and profundity of life.

Gate 55 is a peculiar burden to bear, for it carries within it the promise of a fullness not yet realized. It is the gate of Spirit, of abundance, of the brimming cup, and yet in our present hour the cup does not remain full. A holy homesickness runs through it, a longing that feels older than our circumstances, as if we were fashioned for a feast but given only a foretaste. Those who carry this gate often feel that ache as one of their burdens of love, enduring seasons of emptiness while sensing that the capacity for joy itself is being enlarged. The cup is being forged in the very alternation between abundance and despair, and what feels like absence is part of the slow shaping of humanity learning how to perceive and taste the presence of Spirit.

So in this incarnation, let your heart ache. Befriend the emptiness that visits you often. This is how the cup is forged. This is how we gain the ability to perceive all these clumps of matter and atoms in a new way that ravishes us with joy.

GATE 55 ‣ BASIC FUNCTION

Gate 55 is the Solar Plexus' capacity to perceive spirit and abundance. "Awareness of spirit is not conceptual (Ajna) or instinctual (Spleen), it is an emotion." Since we still experience the Solar Plexus as an awareness center AND a motor center, the fluctuating moods of Gate 55 determine what is correct in each moment. If there is no mood for eating, working, creating, making love, or being social, it is not healthy to force it. When the mood calls for solitude, this gate is meant to honor that without explanation, because its most creative and spiritually connected moments often emerge in deep melancholy. Gate 55 is open to the provocation of Gate 39, which helps it perceive its own spirit and emotional truth. Instead of focusing on whether our cup is half full or half empty, we are meant to marvel that the cup even exists at all.

🧵 Line 1 - Gate 55.1 - CO-OPERATION

Gate 55.1, Cooperation, establishes the foundational theme that abundance is a matter of spirit, whether one experiences the glass as half full or half empty. As a 1st line, this is introspective and concerned with the essence of what Spirit is. Here, the individual emotional Spirit cannot awaken in isolation. It depends on engagement with others, particularly forces that are experienced as more powerful, knowledgeable, or expansive. Jupiter exalted describes the expansion of activity through principled cooperation with such forces, relationships that genuinely enrich the cup rather than drain it. In this cooperation, there is the potential to find Spirit, because the interaction supports growth, prosperity, and the awakening needed to eventually move into social grace.

In detriment, Venus reflects a focus on maintaining harmony with powerful forces without true advancement of Spirit. Energy can be spent preserving the relationship itself, smoothing moods and maintaining continuity, while the deeper progression is stalled. Because this gate operates on an emotional wave, inferior or draining influences can pull the Spirit downward, especially when discernment is lacking. Cooperation alone is not enough. The quality and strength of the forces involved determine whether the Spirit is elevated or diminished. The potential for Spirit is always there, but it is deeply conditioned by who one aligns with.

Gate 55.2, Distrust, projects the emotional Spirit outward without introspection. As a 2nd line, it naturally attracts attention, but because the 55 operates on a powerful high and low emotional wave, others never quite know which mood they will encounter. One day the cup appears full, the next half empty, and this fluctuation can generate suspicion, gossip, or slander. The Spirit here is deeply provocative and visible, yet not necessarily understood. Venus exalted describes the gift of penetrating to the center through genuine relating ability, demonstrating over time that one’s emotional truthfulness is real. Emotional stability and strength of Spirit are dependent on being trusted, and that trust grows when the person lives their truth consistently rather than defensively.

In detriment, Earth reflects the direct challenge of confronting slander or trying to insist on one’s trustworthiness. The more the 55.2 protests, the more distrust can grow. Only continued example, lived quietly and consistently, can soften suspicion. Because this line projects blindly with the wave, it may engage others at a high point and later appear completely different, which can feel misleading to those involved. The emotional drive to be seen as trustworthy does not guarantee acceptance, nor does it automatically benefit the Spirit. The lesson is that trust cannot be forced; it must be demonstrated through time and self awareness.

Practical takeaway: Do not argue for your trustworthiness. Live your emotional truth consistently and allow trust to build through example.

Gate 55.3, Innocence, brings the emotional Spirit into the third line theme of bonds made and broken, where failure and adaptation are inevitable. As with all 3rd lines, experience comes through trial and error, and what looks like failure from one perspective may simply be the natural breaking of a bond. Here, “I was only following orders” can be a genuine defense. Saturn exalted describes that when one acts within correct form, honoring the emotional wave and its moods, failure cannot be personally attributed. If something collapses after acting in alignment with one’s mood and inner timing, the Spirit itself remains intact. The emotional possibility exists to recognize that even sincere efforts can fail without diminishing the Spirit.

In detriment, Mars reflects the attempt to protect one’s Spirit at the expense of others, or to ignore the mood and push forward anyway. For example, committing enthusiastically at a high point in the wave and then withdrawing completely at a low point can create chaos for others. When moods are not honored, bonds break destructively rather than naturally, and consequences ripple outward. Innocence only functions when the emotional process is respected. If the 55.3 tries to override its wave or refuses to walk away when the mood has shifted, emotional distress can build. The survival of the Spirit depends on allowing the wave to guide engagement and disengagement honestly.

Practical takeaway: Honor your emotional wave. When you act in alignment with your mood, even failure does not damage your Spirit.

🧵 Line 4 - Gate 55.4 - ASSIMILATION

Gate 55.4, Assimilation, brings the emotional Spirit into the fourth line theme of friendship and externalization. Here the focus shifts toward working with others, finding the right people, and building emotional bonds that can sustain prosperity and well being. This line is fixed in its externalization. It knows very clearly who feels good and who does not. Especially for those with an Undefined emotional system, there can be immediate clarity about whether being with someone fills the cup or leaves it empty. Assimilation means blending with the right other, but the principle is simple: “Do they make me feel good?” The desire is to find bliss, to find happiness, to find the right emotional track. Yet Gate 55 is rooted in melancholy. There is no survival for individuality without accepting sadness as part of the Spirit. The framework must allow both happiness and melancholy. If it only chases feeling good, the crash on the other side of the wave can be severe.

In detriment, Mars reflects boundless emotional energy that ignores awareness at the risk of the Spirit. Without clarity about timing and the nature of the wave, this line can crash in relationships. It may pursue the high of connection and then collapse when the mood shifts. Emotional beings influence others profoundly. The emotionally Defined can lift or drain the emotionally open, and the Open will amplify and reflect the mood back even stronger. Without awareness, bonding becomes destabilizing. With awareness, it becomes prosperous.

Practical takeaway: Build emotional relationships within a clear framework, and accept both happiness and melancholy as essential to your Spirit.

🧵 Line 5 - Gate 55.5 - GROWTH

Gate 55.5, Growth. This fifth line carries the theme of projection and power. Uranus exalted describes the unusual ability, but only when in a position of power, to accept advice and transform it innovatively. The gift does not exist without authority. When projected on as the one who can bring Spirit, this line fulfills its role by cooperating rather than overtly leading, yet paradoxically retains its power and identity. The emotional strength and Spirit are derived from being socially established in authority. In power, they can live through their moods without being challenged or measured by others. They do not need to be liked. Their position grants immunity, and from that stability comes growth. There is also a seductive quality here. When in the mood and in authority, their Spirit has impact.

In detriment, the Sun reflects an integrative openness where broad acceptance of advice can lead to being eclipsed. Here the Spirit is at risk from conditioning. When not in power, there can be an attempt to harmonize or blend in order to reach authority, but without true power the individuality cannot withstand rejection or condemnation. This is deeply individual energy, the frequency of the outsider, and without authority the emotional wave destabilizes rather than empowers. Growth depends entirely on timing and mood. Only when they are truly in the mood do they have access to their power. Forcing action without the wave strips away their influence and leaves them vulnerable to being overwhelmed emotionally.

Practical takeaway: Honor the relationship between mood and authority. Seek environments where your power is recognized, and never force leadership when you are not in the emotional current that sustains your Spirit.

🧵 Line 6 - Gate 55.6 - SELFISHNESS

Gate 55.6, Selfishness, marks the transition point and the mutative potential of this gate. Saturn exalted: an acquisition obsession that, though alienating, is indirectly materially beneficial to others. Interestingly, this is not Ego-Tribal selfishness but the selfishness of the Spirit. Without meeting material needs, the Emotional system cannot settle and Spirit cannot awaken. The potential here is to find Spirit through materialism, to recognize that there is no awareness without first caring for the body. This line understands that survival comes first. Food on the table before building the church. Only when the individual can sustain themselves does the deeper Spirit have a field in which to emerge.

In detriment, the Moon reflects material abundance that no one shares in, where materialism becomes obsessive and the Spirit turns mean or withholding. The focus on acquisition can isolate rather than elevate. Yet all sixth lines look beyond the present. This one is searching for a future field where Spirit can truly meet Spirit. Until then, it may withdraw, waiting for a world capable of embracing its depth. The lesson remains grounded: there is no Spirit without the body, no awakening without survival. Despite centuries of religious conditioning suggesting that Material is opposed to Spirit, here we finally realize that it is actually the prerequisite.

Practical takeaway: Secure your material foundation without guilt. Feed the body, stabilize your life, and let your individuality stand intact. From that grounded integrity, the deeper Spirit has a chance to awaken.

Oh, my sweet child. I have Gate 55 in an Undefined Center. On its own, Gate 55 is one of the most emotionally volatile gates, experiencing the highs of hope and the deep, deep pain of despair. We AMPLIFY this process, and it can be incredibly taxing. There can be a tendency to believe that abundance or lack is happening to you, when in reality you are magnifying someone else’s wave. Melancholy may feel overwhelming, and euphoria intoxicating. The key is recognizing that Spirit is not something you need to manufacture or chase. Notice when you are riding another person’s emotional weather, and avoid making material or life decisions from amplified moods that do not originate in you. The gift here is that we marvel that the cup exists, and we know that in the future mutation, the cup will always be full. So do not fear the emptiness; it is just for a chapter in humanity's story.

‣ DON'T MAKE REASONS FOR THE LOWS

There is only one salvation for the people who carry this gate, and that is NO REASONS, don't give a reason to your melancholy, don't attach it to somebody else, it's so important. -Ra Uru Hu

This is easier said than done. I've been in my experiment for years, and I still struggle with allowing my melancholy to be what it is: a chemistry. My Mind wants to hurry and make me feel better. My Mind wants to prescribe a reason for the chemistry so I can address it, fix it, and avoid ever feeling that low again. But it truly is a hamster wheel that never ends. Instead, I've been trying to reframe the lows, those gray-sky days, as invitations from the Divine to convene and rest in stillness. The lows I feel carve out the space for more joy to enter in. Leaving it at that gives me more freedom to just be present in life. Because at the end of the day, I know the wave will complete its dip and rise again into bliss...so why make the process more stressful?

Also, I believe melancholy is meant to slow you down. It helps us be alone and drop into self. It helps us tap into the richness of the creative process. Melancholy, to me, is a very specific energy that allows me to take in the preciousness of spirit in anything I am doing. And I mean anything. When you are raking leaves on the lawn, washing a dish in the sink, or observing raindrops falling from a tree branch, this is the energy that lets you perceive the spirit in those movements. You feel God's presence in the smallest of things. You’re taking it all in.

‣ NERVOUSNESS ABOUT EMPTINESS

Below is a clip from a Ra lecture regarding Gate 55. Any of the gates in the Solar Plexus will produce a nervousness about something. Here, it is nervousness about emptiness:

This is a gate of Music because it is in this whole stream, and most of all, it is a gate of sound, of tone, and is acoustic. If you want to keep a moody person happy, don't raise your voice, because they will react to the tone, even if they're wrong in what's going on, so it's very acoustic." -Ra Uru Hu

I highly recommend that anyone with Gate 55, 39, 12, or 22 experiment with music or sound as a healing modality. Those with these gates might read this and think, “Duh, music is already a huge part of my life.” :) Still, I like to use sound to bypass the Not-Self Mind and its attempts to make meaning out of my low moods. I’m also experimenting with purely instrumental or frequency-based music as a way to process emotions. It's that experience of when the "Spirit intercedes with groanings too deep for words." Sometimes a specific chord or arrangement of notes can express the feelings we can't always name.

‣ FOOD + EATING DISORDERS

The awareness potential is the mood to eat. This is one of the things to recognize about the nature of the 55th gate. Any time that you see anybody that has this gate, please understand how important it is to tell them, Do not eat if you are not in the mood! It is so important for them because they can become so unhealthy. -Ra Uru Hu

‣ FICKLENESS, LIMERENCE, + UNREQUITED LOVE

Gate 55 is one of the ten “Love Gates” in Human Design. Ra calls it "the Eternally Indecisive Love," but that is only because of the wave pattern in the emotional stream. We currently experience this love gate in a "half-baked" way, so to speak. The mutation in the Solar Plexus is happening later for other beings, where the wave will cease and only awareness will remain. For us, however, it is difficult to describe the distortion of this energy in the realm of love. It is romantic; it is the source of longing and limerence, the aching inside. I don't know if it is due to societal conditioning or if we were simply meant to have this experience, but much of this energy is usually directed toward romantic, sexual love. We write songs about it, compose poetry, and fixate on certain individuals, erroneously thinking, "If I could just be with them, THEN I would feel complete." But that is just a small, imperfect sample of its true meaning. For me, when I realized that all that limerence was really for God, I relaxed. I am always longing for Spirit, and I take it in as it comes in this life, but now I don't need to burden any one person with the weight of such an expectation.
